(Mackenzie - 2018/2) Four reasons why I wont buy the iPhone X The iPhone X fails to impress me in many ways. Although its the most impressive device Apple has built, it does have a number of flaws that are big enough to convince me to stay away from it and get a competing Android handset instead. _______(I)_________, plenty of publications _______(II)_________ all the great features of Apples new flagship including its large bezel-less display, upgraded processor, and the addition of wireless charging. Its extremely easy to get caught up in all the excitement, but if you take a step back and have an honest look at the new device, youll quickly realize that the iPhone Xisnt all its cracked up to be. It definitely has its faults, which well take a closer look at in this post. Here are four reasons why I wont buy the iPhone X. 1. It doesnt have the X factor The iPhone X is packed with the latest technology. It has a dual-camera setup on the back, a bezel-less display, a powerful chipset, and also supports wireless charging. The problem is that these things arent really new, as they are already present on a number of Android smartphones. The truth is that the new iPhone lacks the X factor, which is at least one unique feature that would make it stand out from the crowd. Just look at the Android world: the Galaxy S8 has the curved display, the Note 8 comes equipped with the S Pen, Motorolas high-end handsets have Moto Mods and the Shatter Shield display, and the OnePlus 5 has Dash Charge. These features give the devices a competitive edge over their rivals and can really influence consumers purchasing decisions. 2. Its way too expensive Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy Note 8 last month that shocked the public with its high price tag of $929. However, starting at $999, the new iPhone almost makes the Note 8 look like a bargain. Its the most expensive iPhone to date and based on what it brings to the table compared to the competition, its kind of hard almost impossible to justify its high price. To have a better idea of just how expensive the iPhone X is, compare it with some of the other high-end smartphones on the market nowadays. 3. Theres no fingerprint scanner on board Apples business strategy seems a bit weird. Instead of adding features to its devices, the company is actually removing them. After ditching the headphone jack last year, the tech giant is back with another bold move: the iPhone X doesnt have a fingerprint scanner. The security feature that has become standard on most high-end and mid-range smartphones is replaced by Face ID, which is Apples new face recognition technology. To unlock the iPhone, you have to lift it up to your face, make sure the camera is pointing at you, and then swipe up. Unlocking with a scan of the finger is much quicker and easier. 4. It doesnt look sexy Lets face it, design is important no one wants an ugly smartphone. While I wouldnt call the iPhone X ugly, I also wouldnt call it good-looking. The overall design of the device could be described as bland. It definitely doesnt stand out from the crowd, and is, to be honest, a bit boring. The first thing I have a problem with is the notch on the top that houses the camera, the proximity sensor, and so forth. Id rather see a slightly larger bezel on top like on the Note 8 or V30, as it just looks a lot more stylish in my opinion. Aside from that, there really arent a lot of bad things to say about the front of the smartphone. I do like the screen-to-body ratio that makes the large device a lot more compact. www.androidauthority.com The correcttime expressionandverb tenseused to complete the sentences in the text are

(Mackenzie - 2016) Brazil Plans to Implement a Control Center on Border with Argentina and Paraguay Folha Online 03/20/2015 Renata Agostini From So Paulo Mariana Carneiro From Buenos Aires The Brazilian government started negotiations with Argentina to implement a Center of Integrated Command and Control in the Triple Border which unites the two countries and Paraguay as a way to intensify anti-smuggling efforts in the area. The information was given on Thursday (19) by the Minister of Justice Jos Eduardo Cardozo, at a forum held by Folha in So Paulo, entitled Smuggling in Brazil. The idea is to bring the police forces of the three countries which could draw together intelligence and enforcement operations. The neighbors could help each other also with commercial information and immigration in the region. Even if we put a man every 50 feet along the border, it would not be enough supervision. We need intelligence, the minister said. He said that border control is one of the main problems faced by Brazil in regards to public safety, and the solution would come from integrated actions combined with the use of technology. According to the Brazilian proposal, Paraguay would be exempt from the project cost, which would be funded by Brazil and Argentina, the minister said. The experience derived from the Integrated Centers erected in the 12 host cities for the World Cup was considered successful and inspired the idea of a unified initiative between the three countries. The region of the Triple Border, where the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguau is located, is a major entry point for smuggled goods in the country. Most come from Paraguay. (Mackenzie - 2016) Science Without Borders Program to be Suspended 09/03/2015 - 09H02 VALDO CRUZ FLVIA FOREQUE Owing to lack of funds, the Planalto Palace has decided to suspend the offer of new scholarships as part of the program Science Without Borders for next year. As Folha has learnt, the budget defined by the governments economic team for next year, a total of R$ 2,1billion (USD $559million), is only enough to cover students who are already living abroad on the program. The Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Students (CAPES, in its Portuguese acronym) said that the designated resources would be used to pay for 13.330scholarships amongst undergraduates and postgraduates in 2016, under its supervision. The National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPQ), another government agency that encourages research, will be allocated resources for another 22.610scholarships. In total, both institutions will send 14.050undergraduates abroad in the second semester of this year. This group of students enters the program under last years selection process. Undergraduates account for the majority of those enrolled in the program, with 79.5%of the scholarships granted. Advisors to President Rousseff have admitted that the government was considering an even harsher cut to the program, but the idea was rejected owing to the likely negative effects it would produce. The cut for Science Without Borders next year is 40.3%from last years budget of R$ 3.5billion (USD $931million). Cutting just one percentage point more would mean disrupting the studies of those who have already been selected and left for university abroad. Launched in July 2011, the program has become one of President Rousseffs flagship policies. After the creation of 101,000places by last year, the promise for her second term was to create another 100,000. The high value of the dollar, however, has drastically increased the cost of program. The program pays foreign universities for the tuition of Brazilian students, as well as providing maintenance grants to the students themselves. While in July 2011 the dollar was worth R$ 1.55now the exchange rate is close to R$ 3.70. There is currently no date defined for the call of new applications to the program. Last year, the selection process began in August. The current expectation is that if the government allocates more funds for the program next year, the main focus will be postgraduates. Questioned on this, Capes would not comment. The agency said, All the Ministry of Education programs will be maintained in 2016. The Ministry is conducting a detailed analysis of the budget in order to determine the scope of the programs for next year, it said in a statement. PRONATEC If Science Without Borders is suspended in 2016, another federal education program will be significantly expanded next year, according to the budget provisions. In 2016, the government is expected to offer five million places on technical courses and on the National Program of Access to Technical Education and Employment (PRONATEC), both for those enrolling in the program as well as those continuing their training. This year, thanks to budget cuts, the numbers of offered places on the program fell to nearly a million, 66.6%less than the three million in 2014. Added to the cost of covering those already enrolled, the total cost of the program in 2015 is R$ 4billion (USD $1.1billion). After hitting its target of enrolling eight million students, the governments aim was to enroll 12 million new students in its second term. If 2016s targets are reached, the government will achieve exactly 50% of the target in the first two years of its second term. (Mackenzie - 2016) The following text refers to question(s) below. Life With Stephen Hawking In 2013, the remarkable life of cosmologist Stephen Hawking was the subject of a documentary called, quite simply, Hawking. Now it is the subject of a feature film. Its called The Theory of Everything and its directed by James Marsh. The film is based on the memoir of Hawkings first wife, Jane Hawking, who met her husband at Cambridge in the 1960s. In the film Jane Hawking is played by Felicity Jones, who says: FELICITY: I think there was an immediate sexual attraction, but at the same time there was a meeting of minds, and I think they challenged each other as well, I think there was a competitiveness between them, which often, when two people who are quite different and I think it was that difference between them that brought them together. But the young couple hadnt been together very long before Stephen Hawking was diagnosed as having Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In The Theory of Everything Stephen Hawking is played by Eddie Redmayne, who talked about the physicists famous voice machine: EDDIE: His relationship with the voice; I mean, the voice itself. It had never occurred to me when I got this part, Why has Stephen Hawking got an American voice? And the answer was, that was the first technology that came, and because his voice then became so related to or his icon became so related to that voice, hes never wanted to change it because thats what we know as his new identity, and vocal identity, and my God is identity important! Jane Hawking nursed her husband for many years and, as Felicity Jones says, they managed to maintain a sense of humour. FELICITY: Thats so important, and thats what weve wanted in telling this story is how both Jane and Stephen are absolutely hilarious, they have a very dry sense of humour, a very English sense of humour, and I think thats partly what enabled them to cope with such difficult circumstances was that theres always a witticism about it, and meeting Stephen, he was incredibly witty and insightful ... and a very dry sense of humour. Stephen and Jane Hawking divorced in the 1990s and Jane subsequently published her memoir as Music to the Stars. It was later revised and republished as Travelling to Infinity. Both titles reflect Stephen Hawkings status as the worlds most important living scientist. As Eddie Redmayne says, this is a remarkable achievement, under the circumstances. EDDIE: The astounding thing is that Stephen Hawking was given two years to live aged 21, and hes now 71, 72. I mean, its against all odds , and its a staggering thing, and whether it is to do with his passion, his drive, his outlook on life, his humour, the specific strain of what the disease is, no one knows, but its a staggering thing, and he is a great icon of hope. www.speakup.com The alternative that contains only adjectives from the text is

(Mackenzie - 2014) LAUGHING ALL THE WAY Understanding jokes is part of the process of native language acquisition, and jokes are part of the charm that belongs to any language. Learning to understand jokes in a new language is both a cause, and a consequence, of language proficiency (Cook 2000). The most obvious benefit of understanding jokes is that it can help students feel more comfortable in their new language. A shared moment of humor lowers the affective filter, that invisible barrier that makes learners feel awkward and uncomfortable. A low affective filter is one of the cornerstones of successfully learning a new language (Krashen 1982). If a class can laugh together, they are likely to learn better together, too. Jokes based on wordplay have additional benefits because they build metalinguistic awareness, or conscious awareness of the forms of language, and this, ___( I )___, helps in learning more language (Ely and McCabe 1994; Zipke 2008; Lems 2011). In particular, metalinguistic awareness boots reading comprehension and encourages higher-order thinking. ___( II )___ native speakers need to access a great deal of linguistic information and background knowledge to get a joke (Aarons 2012). At the same time, jokes that are based on wordplay in another language can be really hard to understand because they need to be processed very quickly. In a social setting where everyone is standing around chatting, understanding a joke that comes up may seem like a high-stakes test. Not understanding a joke in this situation can make someone feel like an outsider and create a sense of isolation. ___( III )___, an important part of learning a new language is learning to enjoy its jokes. Puns: A special form of joke Puns are a special form of humor based on double meanings. Puns are sometimes nicknamed the lowest form of humor and often greeted with groans, but in fact, the language knowledge needed to understand a pun is very sophisticated (Pollack 2011).___( IV )__ they require processing the sound and meaning of words twice, puns demand considerable language agility. __( V )__ humor based on sight gags, funny facial expressions, or amusing visual arrangements, the humor of pun is based on language play. (Mackenzie - 2013) Will Melinda Gates Change the Game for Women? She plans to use the Gates Foundations billions to revolutionize contraception worldwide. In the 12 years since Melinda Gates and her husband, Bill, created the Gates Foundation, the worlds largest philanthropic organization, she has done a lot of traveling. A reserved woman who has long been wary of the public glare attached to the Gates name, she comes alive, her associates say, when shes visiting the foundations projects in remote corners of the world. You get her out in the fi eld with a group of women, sitting on a mat or under a tree or in a hut, she is totally in her element, totally comfortable, says Gary Darmstadt, director of family health at the foundations global health program. Visiting vaccine programs in sub-Saharan Africa, Gates would often ask women at remote clinics what else they needed. Very often, she says, they would speak urgently about birth control. Women sitting on a bench, 20 of them, immediately theyll start speaking out and saying, I wish I had that injection I used to get, says Gates. I came to this clinic three months ago, and I got my injection. I came last week, and I couldnt get it, and Im here again. They were talking about Depo-Provera, which is popular in many poor countries because women need to take it only four times a year, and because they can hide it, if necessary, from unsupportive husbands. As Gates discovered, injectable contraceptives, like many other forms of birth control, are frequently out of stock in clinics in the developing world, a result of both funding shortages and supply-chain problems. Women would tell her that theyd left their farms and walked for hours, sometimes with children in tow, often without the knowledge of their husbands, in their fruitless search for the shot. I was just stunned by how vociferous women were about what they wanted, she says. Because of those women, Gates made a decision thats likely to change lives all over the world. As she revealed in an exclusive interview with Newsweek, she has decided to make family planning her signature issue and primary public health a priority. By Michelle Goldberg The sentence Gates would often ask women at remote clinics what else they needed in the direct speech is

STOP ANTICIPATING TIREDNESS Recently, I was on a flight from San Francisco to Chicago when I overheard one of the silliest conversations imaginable. It demonstrates a critical yet common mistake that many people seem to make on an ongoing basis. The conversation, ____(I)____, centered around how tired each of these two people were going to be tomorrow and all week! It was as if each person was trying to convince the other, and perhaps themselves, how many hours and how hard they were working, how few hours of sleep they were going to get, and, most of all, how tired they were going to be. I wasnt quite sure if they were bragging or complaining, but one thing was certain, they were appearing more and more tired the longer the conversation continued. They each said things like, Boy, am I going to be tired tomorrow, I dont know how Im going to make it through the rest of the week, and Im only going to get three hours of sleep tonight. They told stories of late nights, lack of sleep, uncomfortable hotel beds, and early morning meetings. They anticipated feeling exhausted, and Im sure they were going to be correct in their assumption. Their voices were heavy, as if the lack of sleep they were going to get was already affecting them. I actually felt myself getting tired just listening to part of the conversation! The problem with anticipating tiredness in this way, or in any way, is that it clearly reinforces tiredness. It rivets your attention to the number of hours you are sleeping and how tired you are going to be. Then, when you wake up, youre likely to do it again by reminding yourself how few hours it has been since your head hit the pillow. Who knows what really happens, but seems it to me that anticipating tiredness must send a message to your brain reminding you to feel and act tired because that is the way you have programmed yourself to respond. (MACKENZIE - 2012) Go Easy on Yourself By Stuart Bradford Do you treat yourself as well as you treat your friends and family? That simple question is the basis for a new area of psychological research called self-compassion how ________ (I) people view themselves. People who find it ________ (II) to be supportive and understanding to others often score ________ (III) low on self-compassion tests. They get ________ (IV) with themselves for perceived failures like being overweight or not exercising. ANXIOUS The research suggests that accepting our imperfections may be the first step toward better health. People who score high on tests of self-compassion have less depression and anxiety, and tend to be happier and more optimistic. Preliminary data suggest that self-compassion can even influence how much we eat and may help some people lose weight. This idea does contrast with the advice of many doctors and self-help books, which suggest that willpower and self-discipline are the keys to better health. But Kristin Neff, a pioneer in the field, says self-compassion is not to be confused with self-indulgence or lower standards. I found in my research that the biggest reason people arent more self-compassionate is that they are afraid theyll become self-indulgent, said Dr. Neff, an associate professor of human development at the University of Texas at Austin. They believe self-criticism is what keeps them in line. Most people have gotten it wrong because our culture says being hard on yourself is the way to be.
