(UFPR - 1994) SIGN LANGUAGE In the mid-18th century, a formal system of sign language was developed to help deaf people communicate. A French clergyman and educator of the deaf, Charles Michel, first developed a system for spelling words with a manual alphabet and later expanded his system to include whole concepts.
