(UFRGS -2004) The past quarter-century of American popular culture was ruled by the great mega-franchises of science fiction - Star Wars, Star Trek, Independence Day, The Matrix. But lately, since the turn of the millennium or so, weve been dreaming very different dreams. The stuff of those dreams is fantasy - swords and sorcerers, knights and ladies, magic and unicorns. With The Two Towers, the new 4installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, we have seen what might be called 1the enchanting of America. The evidence is a new preoccupation with a nostalgic, magical vision of a medieval age. It all started with a little-known Oxford professor whose specialty was the West Midland dialect of Middle English. Beginning with The Hobbit, a story he invented in the early 1930s to amuse his children, John Ronald Reuel Tolkiens novels first became 2merely popular and then turned into a phenomenon. The recent Tolkien revival began when Americas long summer romance with technology was dwindling. 3The magic would have to come from somewhere else, and we found it in fantasy. Swords, not lasers. Magic, not electricity. The past, not the future. (Time, Dec. 2, 2002). Consider the following sentences: I - The magic should come from another place. II - It would be necessary for the magic to come from elsewhere. III - The magic had to come from any other place. Which of them means the same as the sentence THE MAGIC WOULD HAVE TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE (ref. 3)?

(UFGRS -2002) Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills. He was a big, beefy man with 1hardly any neck, 2although he did have a very large moustache. Mrs. Dursley was thin and blonde and had nearly twice the usual amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over garden fences, spying on her neighbours. The Dursleys had a small son called Dudley and in their opinion 3there was no finer boy anywhere. The Dursleys had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that somebody would discover it. They didnt think they could bear it if anyone found out about the Potters. Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Dursleys sister, but they hadnt met for several years; in fact, Mrs. Dursley pretended she didnt have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as 4unDursleyish as it was possible to be. The Dursleys shuddered to think what the neighbours would say if the Potters arrived in the street. The Dursleys knew that the Potters had a small son too, but they had never even seen him. This boy was another good reason for keeping the Potters away; they didnt want Dudley mixing with a child like that. J. K. Rowlings, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. (UFRGS - 2001) The teachers magazine The dramatic story of war among angels existed in heaven even before earth was formed. The great 17th century poet John Milton described in his masterpiece Paradise Lost what he considered the first test of free will: the fall of angels. His story begins when Lucifer is ordered to obey the Son of God. Lucifer refuses, the rebellious angels join him and challenge the power of God. On the first day, one of the powerful Seraphs and Lucifer meet, angel against angel. On the second day, the archangel Michael asks for assistance and on the third day the Son of God comes forward. He pursues the enemy to the bounds of heaven and the bad angels throw themselves into the bottomless pit. The war in heaven is over, but Lucifer is far from finished. God has created a new race humans. The struggle between good and evil begins. Fonte: The Teachers Magazine, February 1998. Complete the sentence below with the appropriate verb form. The screenplay, originating as Marc Normans brainstorm and turned by Tom Stoppard 2into a 3razor-sharp dialogue reminiscent of his Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, dares to imagine 4whatever it likes about the link between Shakespeares artistic passions and his mad yearning for a certain aristocratic beauty. Meanwhile, this 5tirelessly inventive comedy envisions an Elizabethan theatre filled with the same backbiting and conniving we enjoy today and has great fun presenting the creation of Romeo and Juliet problems and all. (UFRGS -1998) For American women in the workplace, 1938 was an important year. That was the year the U.S. Fair Labour Standards Act was passed, creating working-conditions protection and the minimum wage. Though the law applied to both men and women, it was women who stood to benefit the most. The Act, in combination with World War II - during which women were drafted to work in factories and offices -3forever changed American womens work roles. In the postwar decades, two phenomena 4further advanced the role of women in the workplace. The first was the womens movement beginning in the late 1960s; 1leaders like Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem immensely changed the corporate consciousness of America. Discrimination and double standards can still be found, but these pioneers began a revolution that has culminated in a firmly established belief among most American employers that women can do the job - any job - as well as men. Many thought that day would never come. The second phenomenon is the advent of the personal computer. It has been a great 6equalizer in offices, among 2other things, getting executives to type! Moreover, PCs and telecommunications technologies have enabled more women and men to work at home, increasing employment options and bringing the perennial kids-and 5career battle to an end. Certainly, challenges remain, and the struggle goes on. But as the millennium approaches, the pace of womens progress is undeniably accelerating. Na frase Many thought that day would never come (fim do pargrafo 2), a palavra mais adequada para completar o sentido de many :
