Texto A. Microplastics are tiny particles composed of plastic that have been becoming a worrisome problem in the oceans. Besides a direct contribution to pollution, microplastics can also release chemicals such as plasticizers and flame retardants into the water they are in. An investigation carried out by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science found that water temperature and salinity can have an effect on how much of these chemicals are released from microplastics, reinforcing the need to keep these materials out of the environment
